Toxic Productivity

I had the opportunity to attend TEDxGateway today having Celeste Headlee and Devina

The talk opened up a new perspective for me on how to improve productivity. It was a gentle reminder of the importance of rest.

Most of us focus on locking long hours. However, research suggests that long hour drains our productivity. Hence working long hour is of no use.

In reality, we are silently killing ourselves. Rest makes us more productive as it helps change our focus and by the time we return to work we have a newer thought process altogether.

The current research suggests that Indians are the most burned-out which suggests there will be a rise in mental health issues with leaps and bounds in coming years.

It’s in the interest of everyone to take a step back pause and reflect. You have only one life to live 🙂

Do a reality check how long can you stay without your smart device in your hand? Do you feel abnormal if you leave it at home? This will help you figure out how addicted you are to smartphones.

In the age of WFH, we have covered each corner of our home as a working place. We carry our emails everywhere along with us and are in a rush to check them after every few minutes.

She suggested having a start time and end time and a dedicated workplace. Else our brain will trigger work all the time since you covered every corner of the home with work.

There must be time for your family and other fun stuff. You can develop a habit of reading writing or anything else that excite you but yeah it should be without the internet :p

In India, it’s difficult every one of us has FOMO and job insecurity and that’s how every one of us gets used to working extra hours.

There are companies which demand you to work 12 hours a day for straight 5 days. It’s time to speak up. In case you can’t, it’s better to gift your boss Celeste’s book Do Nothing. Or maybe just share this article with your manager to get you started on how to increase more productivity.

Because in the long run if you continue to work 12 hours it will be more dangerous than smoking! You might be thinking of Elon Musk here. There is an exception everywhere but look at what works for you.

Hope this article helps you to do a reality check on your mental health. Hope you stay occupied in non-office work this weekend! Have a relaxing and adventurous weekend!
