Let’s first discuss the downside of the rapid speaking. When we speak fast, it sounds more like a sales pitch. Additionally, the listener will find it hard to understand or absorb the key points from your talk. Also, the listener lost interest in the speaker. We probably speak quickly when we are nervous or impatient.
By speaking slowing we give the audience more time to think and digest our content. The speaker also catches the attention of the audience. Often we think pauses are inappropriate, but if you go through the speeches of Barack Obama, you observe his wise pauses. He speaks slowly and gives the audience the space to think thoroughly about the content. You may be able to cover up less point by speaking slowly. That’s where you need to be choosy to pick up the key points in your speech.
The next time you’re speaking, slow down a bit and observe after your speech how much impact you’re able to deliver.
