Why do we need to read books?

Do you know how Elon Musk learnt to build rockets? He simply read books. Sounds implausible, right? How can someone just by reading the books can build rockets? Reading is the first step and the basic foundation. Thereafter, he followed the next steps and executed his ideas.

The next question might be how is reading social media post differ than reading a book. If you happen to read this, you are someone who scrolls through the social media posts. Research suggests that reading a book makes the brain work harder. Reading a newspaper or book gives you a chance to take a pause and gain more insights. While reading over social media, we are busy in scrolling more than gaining insights we are looking for entertainment, not learning.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” – Joseph Addison

Moreover, reading improves your memory. Our memory power has been declining as we have stopped using it consciously. However, how does reading a book improve our memory? We digest a lot of information while reading. This new information creates synapses or strengthens the old ones, thereby improving the memory skills.

That’s it all about today. Hope you are excited to pick up a book now!

Stay tuned!

  1. Nice article.
I am reading YN Harari these days and intend to complete his three books before the end of Jan, and reread them in Feb. Reading his books twice would not be enough though.
After him, I would read Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo.
And then, my all-time favorites, George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway:)
What are you reading these days?
