Product Wisdom

A gold mine of product wisdom from Alex Zhu, founder of Musically later acquired by TikTok

• Extremely Light Content – creation and consumption need to happen in seconds, not in hours or minutes.

• Follow Human Behaviour – Most of us use smartphones to play chat or entertain not to educate.

When was the last time you saw someone learning actively on mobile?

• Teenagers – They have plenty of time and are more digitized in nature. If they really liked the product the community will skyrocket through word of mouth.

On Building Online Communities

• Utility – When the first user joined Instagram 1.0 they didn’t have the feed stories likes or comments. It had amazing filters and made the picture extremely cool to share on other social channels.

• Feedback I – Apart from analyzing the data Alex created multiple fake accounts on Musically just to talk with the new users and understand what they liked what made them record and more.

• Feedback II – They had an active WeChat group where they interacted daily with users to learn user’s opinions on new features. It saved them time as they just wireframe with these users before writing any piece of code.
