N: Did you know Pincha your carbon footprint is still the same since the lockdown?
P: How’s that possible Nahata? I barely traveled during the lockdown.
N: Didn’t your usage of the internet increase significantly?
P: So how does it relate to increasing in carbon footprint?
N: Every activity you do on the internet comes with a cost of few grams of carbon dioxide. It is emitted because of the energy needed by your devices and the wireless network.
That’s an eye-opener conversation.
In fact, the 4.1 billion netizens produce around 4% of global greenhouse emissions through the internet and electronic gadgets yearly.
It is larger than the yearly greenhouse emission of Great Britain.
An average internet user uses 365 KWh electricity and 2900 liter of water which corresponds to the C02 emitted when you travel a good 1400 Km by car.
The above data is of the pre-pandemic era. It is highly likely that the current emission might have increased significantly.
Are there anyways to decrease the internet carbon footprint?
The global tech giants have been pushing toward cleantech and renewable energies to decrease the carbon footprints of the data centers.
What about us? How can we contribute to decreasing our individual carbon footprint?
I will narrate 3 simple points which will surely reduce your carbon footprint.
• Use an Ad-free internet browser like brave. By simply blocking the ads you can reduce the bandwidth by 25%.
• Delete unwanted emails straight away and unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters. It decreases the load on the servers and thereby consuming less electricity and making the earth greener 🙂
• Lastly, turn off your laptops and the mobile data when you don’t need them at least for a prolonged period especially before sleep 🙂
Let’s take a little step to make our planet greener 🙂
