Why We Sleep

One of my siblings referred me to read this book last year but couldn’t read the book then. Recently during the isolation period I was reading most of the time and thought to take up this book. It was the best investment as it helped me to know how our sleep affects our other activity throughout the day. The best part of the book was the realization that sleep cycle is not same when we go to bed and by the time we wake up. If you lose bed time sleep it will have different affect than the ones when you end up losing the morning sleep.

Our sleep is basically divided into Rapid Eye Moment(REM) and Non – REM(NREM). NREM is also known as the deep sleep. The sleep runs on alternate cycle REM and NREM. However the timing isn’t fixed for each cycle. Initially the cycle for NREM is longer and later the cycle for REM is longer. That’s why sleeping late or waking up too early has an adverse affect on our health.

NREM sleeps help more in the growth of tissues and muscles. It strengthens our immune system which is the need of the hour during this pandemic. REM helps in improving our memory and in bringing up our creative skills.

The book beautifully explains how we are already in the pandemic of sleep with the decline of sleep time. If you are driving a car post sleeping just 4-6 hours you are more dangerous than one driving after consuming alcohol or drugs. However yet we don’t have instruments to measure the lack of sleep precisely the way we can measure if a person is drunk or high on drugs. That’s there are no laws as of now.

The book helped me change the perspective that sleep must not be taken lightly and I must focus on increasing my sleep time instead of decreasing it. Whereas most of us think the other way around. That’s the irony of life. We think by decreasing sleep we will have more time. That’s definitely true. However we tend to become less productive and become worse in perceiving things correctly. By sleeping more we can shot up the productive and improve our health too given that you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work during the day time.

Most of us sleep less during the week days and want to cover up the credit sleep in the weekend. However like bank sleep doesn’t operate in credit. In short we can’t cover up the losses by sleeping more on weekend. That’s how most of corporate world cover the sleep. But actually it is destroying our health in the long run.

It’s one of the best book on health because if you don’t sleep just for 10 days consistently you are about to leave the planet. I highly recommend you to the read the book to know how it affects you.
