Which one is easier to do replace or restrict? Is it easy to restrict from scrolling or to replace it with any other habit like walking, reading, breathing and more? What do your smart device, brain, say?
Let’s see what happens back in our brain when we restrict. If you force yourself from scrolling, back in the mind there will be more thoughts bombarding related to the feed. That’s how our brain work. Do a simple experiment for a minute, don’t think about that red donkey. Even humans haven’t discovered a red donkey yet. Hence, don’t think about the red donkey for a minute.
Chances are high that you just visualised a red donkey. That’s why restriction doesn’t work in some cases. Still at most of the places we see the restriction which actually attracts more people. We want to possess what we are restricted to. Do ponder, what about those instances when we are restricted to do things we don’t like to do π (for instance studies)
Let’s see what happens with replacement. When we replace scrolling with reading articles like this one :P, we focus on reading articles. That’s what runs back in the mind. Scrolling is replaced with Reading. You will be still be tempted to scroll whenever the cue is around the corner. Focusing on the new activity is of utmost important. We need to plan out accordingly where we will be focusing our energy. Sounds easy. It’s easy to put in action as well. Take up any habit you are planning to change.
Until then!
