The crucial 4 steps to learn anything!

During the day, I came across an email which talks about the process of learning. For instance, when we learn to drive, at the beginning it’s tough to control everything at once. You need to operate the steering, clutch, accelerator, gear and more. That’s too many things at once. Thereafter we make mistake and improvise on them and keep on improvising on them. Finally we reach a stage where everything is running on autopilot as in we don’t have to put in much efforts in managing all the tasks at once. Isn’t that incredible? However, we often neglect these miracles. Back to the steps. Let’s name those 4 steps:

  • Unconscious Incompetence
  • Conscious Incompetence
  • Conscious Competence
  • Unconscious Competence

To excel in any habit you name, including brushing. We grow through the above 4 steps. Let’s take the example of chewing. At first we may be chewing incorrectly knowing or unknowingly. For unknowingly ones, until one day we figure out the correct way we will continue the wrong habit*. That’s why we need to read continuously to know more and more. Moving to the knowingly ones, where eventually everyone reaches. The chances are low that we are willing on the efforts to improve since we are good shape now, why worry and put the efforts? Others might be making on efforts to improve those lies in the conscious incompetence. Eventually after reaching threshold point, our practice bring magic and we become competent in nibbling appropriately. Again after constant practice we reaching the tipping point, where we don’t even have to pay attention consciously and can easily gnaw in the right manner. We won’t reach to last step or even the third step in a day or a week or a month. It will take time depending on our practice. Just as Buffet says, “You can’t produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant.”

*In case you want to recall the correct way to chew, you can find it here.
