After a long time, I have completed a book. Again, thanks to one of my friends, who helped me to reboot my reading habit. This book is about moving from ice cream to candle i.e. from selfish to selflessness. On the scale of 1 to 10, we lies somewhere in the middle. We aren’t extreme selfish or selflessness. We are somewhere in the middle. Life is all about moving from ice cream to candle.
The book narrates beautifully about 2 imaginative character Harry and Lalita who are Harvard graduates. Harry is working as a senior executive position in a MNC. He is well respected in the society and the new generation wants to have a life like him. However, he is having tough time in his marriage.
They both met in Harvard, but lost the spark as they progressed in life. As we progress, we devote less time to relations and more time to work. We take relations for granted too. Thought we know there is nothing granted in this life, still we end up taking things for granted.
Additionally, there was discussion on the competitive nature of a human being. We compete at every place, in office, in college or in sport. The competitive nature may be good or not for us. It varies from people to people. But in the long race, the competition starts to eat out since it never ends. Even we reach to the top we start to feel insecure as someone else might over take us. We need to compete with ourselves. Matthew McConaughey has narrated beautifully in his Oscar award winning speech here. Do give it a watch it will take less than 5 minutes 😉 In a nutshell, the hero we see a decade later.
We are spiritual beings given the opportunity to experience a human life. Ironically, we feel ourselves as human beings and want to experience a spiritual life. Towards the end the book talks about being selflessness. However, selflessness doesn’t mean we don’t care about oneself. While travelling on a plane, the air hostess request to put on first one’s oxygen mask first then help someone else. Similarly, in life we need to take care of ourselves first then we help or give away to others.
