How did Deepwali get changed to Diwali?

Most of the people wishing over whatsapp or phone calls wish Happy Diwali now, why so? My theory is that Diwali is easier to pronounce and so we started using that very word instead of the original one. Further, the advertisements too happen of Diwali not Deepwali.

Deepwali is to signify the diyas. I don’t know what does Diwali signify. As more people use the word it has become the new norm and people don’t see anything wrong with it because everyone is doing that. In coming times, Deepwali will be a thing of the past that would be read over school books only.

Doing the right thing over the easy thing is a tough job it seems. Many of us accept the easy thing as right one.
