I had the privileged to complete this book recently. Thanks to one of my siblings. The book talks about the 10 instincts that we have in us and those instincts brings constraint for us to see the world as it is. A book backed by data and facts.
Gap Instinct: We see the world in dichotomy as we already discussed in this article. They versus Us whereas mostly of the world’s population lies between they and us.
Negativity Instinct: Few weeks back we discussed as to why negative sell faster here. That’s the reason most of the headlines are presented in a negative manner to attract more visitors.
Straight Line Instinct: We don’t see things in a curved manner or in an exponential manner. It took time to realize that the pandemics like covid19, Ebola are based on exponential curves and not on straight lines. Even we consider the population will continue to increase the same pace whereas the reality is that the curve has already flattened.
Fear Instinct: The fear of death makes us do many things. Just like fear of climate change or anything else. The fear of spread of the virus led to lockdowns all over the world, whether it is correct or not is a totally different topic. Fear unconsciously makes us do things.
Size Instinct: As we already discussed here, large numbers have huge impact on our brain and make us dumber.
Generalization Instinct: We have the habit of generalizing things without thinking much. When we think of America or Europe, we only imagine the luxurious life, whereas there are people living of all income groups. We consider majority means tending to 100% percent, whereas it means somewhere between 51% and 99%. It can be 62% or 73% or any random number between the range. When you hear someone using the word majority instead of the exact percentage, you must be skeptical.
We will discuss the remaining five tomorrow. Stay tuned!
