Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Seagull is a popular name for gull, a bird. I read this book today. It’s a small book, readable within a hour or two. One of my close friends recommended me this book few days back.

Most of the gull lives for eating but Jon lived for flying. He was even outcaste from the flock though he made tremendous progress in flying. Flying was not the norm for the Seagull.

As described in the book, it takes thousands of years to become skillful as Jonathan was. Later a different, flock took Jon in their wing and made him more skillful. He was still thinking of other Seagull back in Earth, who might have needed a tutor. He requested his instructor to let him go so that he can teach anyone who is interested in flying.

He returned to his home and found that a few Seagull, who have been recently outcaste just because of their love for flying. He took them in his wing and nurtured them beautifully. Later on all of them returned to their flock and start practicing. They were asked to leave but they didn’t and many of the young Seagull were attracted to their skillful flying. They too wanted to join. Sooner one by one joined them, increasing the count to thousands.

The eyes show us what’s limited but understanding helps us to know what more progress can be still made. We need to learn to observe the things as they are without any lens. That’s what Jon learnt. Observing the true picture may not be easier at times. He made his students observe the good traits even in those who made their life tougher. It’s all about the practice. The more we practice the better we become. Isn’t it a simple principle?

Those who want to do something different are considered outcaste even in our society but when they make tremendous progress and flourish. They are praised and appreciated at every nook and corner.
