What’s the difference you feel between texting and calling? You may text your family members and friends more frequently and talk rarely. Why so?
The age of Instant Messaging apps made the texting possible and overtake calls. Whatsapp, sees 320 million daily active users who send 43 billion messages daily on the platform, spending an average of 28 minutes in the app daily. You may spend significantly more than the average.
In the call you are just connected for that moment until the call gets disconnected whereas in the texting you are connected until the chat ends. The chat may continue for weeks or months that’s why at times texting may make you feel more connected. It creates the illusion in the brain.
While texting ‘seek and reward’ dopamine is triggered, that’s what make us come back again and again to texting as it’s a pleasure seeking activity for the brain. The more you text, the more you want to text. Just observe during the day, if there is any arousal of the urge to text. I couldn’t find any research related to voice calls and dopamine. May be dopamine is not released in the equivalent amounts during the calls.
How many text do you send in a day? Isn’t this such a stupid question how can one keep the track. In whatsapp, in the setting menu->Data and storage usage -> Network usage. One can note the numbers. Now you know how much you send and receive. Let’s track the number for a week. Don’t forget to reset the statistics.
Knowing about the little things with which we spend significant time in the day, will make our life more colorful and bright. Happy Sunday !!!
