At times we end up doing many stuff still they are not actions. We wrongly assume them to be actions and are happy performing them. But later when we walk out of the illusion and notice the reality, we are dumbstruck. The above image clearly explains the difference between actions and motions.
For instance, Bob is in sales job. He plans to call/meet four potential client during the day. He is strategizing as to whom to approach for more sells. He meets each of them one by one. But he could not convert anyone of them. We end up assuming these activity to be actions but it is simply motion as Bob didn’t make any sells for the day. The cycle keeps repeating and we stay in the illusion that we are action oriented. Instead we were focusing on the wrong metrics all the time. Picking up the right thing to focus on will surely help.
Don’t confuse motion with productivity. Productivity is a measurement of effectiveness of the action. Whereas motion is focusing on the wrong activity and completing it diligently and feeling happy for completion of the task.
Choosing the right metrics is of more importance initially then comes the effort into picture. How do we choose the right metrics? It is an iterative process. Trial and error. The more you practice the better you get it. Secondly deep down we always know the right metrics. It may take some time to realize it. Keeping faith in oneself will surely help in navigating.
