Did you ever wonder why do people smoke, even though they know it’s injurious to health? Feel free to replace smoke with any other injurious activities you want to such as overeating, no exercise and more.

The answer lies in our today’s topic. It’s about the instant gratification. We got this feature from our ancestors, who didn’t have to think much about the future. Only about the near future and present. They only need to survive from large predators and search for food. This perspective doesn’t work well in today’s age. But we have this nature in us.

After doing exercise over a day or two, we don’t feel satisfied as we are not getting rewarded instantly. That’s why it becomes difficult to continue to do exercise over a long period of time. Because we get results after six months or more.

Rolling back to smoking, people get instant stress relief or the kick boost. As our nature, we neglect the long term view as we are more involved in the instant gratification, even though it affect our health badly. The food taste so yummy that it becomes difficult to not overeat.

How can we shift to delay gratification?

May be shifting to delay gratification might be difficult initially but with time it can be built. Further you can utilize the instant gratification to your benefit by rewarding oneself with small gifts after you complete the task. Starting small is the key instead of having a grand beginning.
