
Before google became a go to word for surfing the web, there were other search engines such as Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista and more. However, with time Google became dominated the search space. But what made it possible for Google to dominate the space. The simple answer is, better user experience.
When was the last time you went to the second page of Google search result? Second page may be a far away thing. Do we even scroll till the end of the page? We just find our answer in the first few links. We are simply getting better results in a lesser duration of time. Time is the ultimate asset we have.
As years passed, Google kept on becoming better and better. Youtube and Android are it’s most valuable acquisition. Before Google acquired Youtube, there was a service offered by Google named as Google videos similar to that of Youtube but it was not a hit. Google even jumped in the social media space with Google+ it was not a hit. Google fails too! But its strength lies in the search space and over time it became the king.
Android made Google dominant in the mobile space. By July 2020, Android had 74.6% market share in the global OS market, which will increase as more users use smart devices. Android is free to install on any mobile device but the manufacturer needs to install the GMS (Google Mobile Services) i.e. the Google family apps such as Gmail, Google, Duo, Google Maps, Play Store and more. This ensures that users are using google services more. Generally the consumer is reluctant to change the application unless the government bans it or we find any other application which is more beneficial.
Google allows us to store unlimited photos in Google photos. Obviously, there is nothing free from a corporate company. At the back of mind there will a business set up. The photos are helping Google to train it’s machine learning models and make them better. Secondly it is making us more dependent on Google.
Google came up with the chrome browser and made it a world class browser with around 69% market share in the laptop/desktop browser space and 63% market share in the mobile browser space. Leading the browsing space with significant margins.
The challenges that lies ahead for Google is in voice search. Echo is giving a tough competition to Google Home Mini. Though recently the Google’s market share has increased to around 31% market share whereas echo leading the domain with 53% market share. To lure Indian customers, Amazon signed a deal with Amitabh Bachchan so that he can be the voice of Alexa.
