Overton Window

Overton Windows is a political model for understanding how ideas change over time and influence politicians. The term is coined after Joseph P. Overton, who introduced the concept in 1990s as an executive at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a conservative think tank in Michigan.

The politician only discusses the topics which lie within the slider, since those topics are widely accepted within the society. It will be rare for the politicians to support for a cause which lies outside of the window as that won’t help them to gain electoral support. For instance, climate change was not in politicians speech for a long time.

The same window lies in other aspect of life too. We don’t converse on all the topics with anyone. There is always be a slider. The slider helps us to focus on the significant points that need to be communicated.

Talking out of the slider has it’s advantage too as one gets the tag of first mover. The e-cars used to lie out of the slider window. A few people where interested in e-cars until Tesla hits the road and now it is within the slider.

Take a look in your day to day life, you will surely find lots of slider. In fact there is a slider associated with every task we do. There is a slider for the food items you want to have in breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a slider for the way you want to have your life. The sliders are unique for everyone. They are meant to be unique.
