Fear

Last year I had the privilege to join Toastmaster but since December couldn’t continue it. Later we had lockdown and couldn’t continue it in person. Moreover, I didn’t practice. Hence, could not improve the skill. However, recently I wrote a speech and practiced it a couple of times.

Is improving the speaking skill a necessity?

First of all it is not a necessity as such but having that skill will give us a lot of confidence and upper hand at various places. The way we present ourselves makes a huge impact. It takes courage to deliver one’s thought in front of a huge crowd even in one’s mother tongue. Things can be done happily without this skill too.

I have the fear of public speaking. Additionally, I get a nervous while delivering. Only practice can help me to improve, still I have been postponing to take the required action. Maybe internally I am not that serious to improve or don’t have the desire to put on the required efforts. I have reached the tipping point now and plan to take it seriously going forward.

This reminds of Warren Buffet , who was terrified at public speaking. He took some small steps and cured the fear. He didn’t overcome the fear in an instant. He actually signed up for a public speaking course and dropped out of it. He completed his Dale Carnegie course in second try and rest is history.

The below quote explains the my current situation perfectly.

“I couldn’t do it. I knew that if I didn’t cure it then, I’d never cure it”-

Warren Buffett
