The new cancer: “Sitting”

Back in 2018, Tim cook said in an interview, “Sitting is the new cancer.” What do you think of Tim’s quote? Is it true? Let’s figure out in today’s article.

One can sit in variety of postures ranging from chair posture to asans like Vajrasana (Diamond pose), Padmasana (Lotus pose), Sukhasana, Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus pose) and more. I am aware of these 4 sitting asans only as of now. There may be many more. Did you notice something common in them? They all are called asan i.e. yoga pose which is beneficial for health. We won’t go in much details about the benefits of these poses today. Maybe some other day.

At least we know these postures are good for our health, they don’t lead to cancer. In fact it is not even possible to sit in those postures at a stretch. It took me time to develop the habit of sitting on those postures. I am able to sit for a duration of only 15 minutes.

Back to quote, Mr. Cook was referring to chair sitting as sitting. Sitting for a longer duration in chair is harmful for our health. It leads various heart disease and even cancer. There is less moment from our body. Further, we don’t know the link between chair sitting and mental health. But we do know that the risk of anxiety and depression is higher in people that sit more.

We have been working from home for the last 5 months. We take less break now, ending up in chair for longer duration. Trying out those pose instead of sitting in the chair will help you in the long run to make your body and mind more active. The choice lies completely in your hand to make a change starting today.
