The Retail King of India

Popularly goes by the name KB. At one time he was considered the king of Indian retail chain. He is the founder of Pantaloon Retail chain and the Future Group.

Back in time in the earlier stage of his life, he was not admitted in the National Retail Federation, because of his poor communication skills. His initial way of communication with the media houses and the financiers was considered poor. Though later the same federation named him as retailer of the year. He was in the race of rapid expansion. But the 2008 financial crisis and the entrance of new players like Aditya Birla and Reliance Retail affected his profit margin and sales heavily. He end up selling both his ventures to them. Future Group to Reliance and Pantaloon to Aditya Birla.

Further he couldn’t leverage the growing e-commerce sector even by partnering with the likes of Amazon. His online ventures such as Brand factory didn’t gain much traction.

As we see he has completely failed after having created such huge retail chains but unable to sustain them. Reminds me of Bezos quote from one of his interviews back in 2018 “Amazon is not too big to fail. In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years.” It’s okay even if Kishore Biyani failed. He is still a rock star. He has ton of experience and he will surely venture into new space. People go through failure to come stronger!

Until then…
