How many digital searches are done per day?

During the day I came across a Q&A forum, where it was discussed number of google queries done per second on the planet. The calculation done was particular to searches done on Google only.

Let’s make the horizon of searching a bit broad including other searches that we do on Amazon, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and search engines.

There is approx 7.8 billion people on this planet as of August 2020, of 1.4 billion lives in China and 6.2 billion in rest of the world. Since none of the products that we are discussing are not used in China, we will be taking the population size as 6.2 billion.

For second step how many people have to access to internet in the world, roughly 50%. Reducing the population to 3.1 billion. On an average almost everyone do two searches over google or other search engine, two over Instagram, one over Facebook, two over Youtube and one over Amazon per day. Resulting in total 8 query per person per day. Now 8*3.1 billion is 24.8 billion. That number of searches are done over the internet per day in the world, excluding China, where the internet penetration is higher too.

We don’t have any data to compare for the actual searches done over the internet so we are not aware of the error percentage in our calculations. You might be thinking that you may do more search over google or youtube. Yeah one can but here we are taking an average count. There are many people who don’t search on regular basis so it cancels out those. It is a rough calculation of the amount of search we do over the digital space per day.
