We are half way through the week long Jainism festival “Paryushana Parv”. You can read about the previous 3 days here.
Today’s day is about the control over voice. We mostly practice “maun” i.e. silence to refrain from speaking for a desired time. People practising noble silence doesn’t even make gesture or write or read. I along with my sibling have been practising “maun” for 2 hours a day since more than last 6 months. One feels more energised since one is not speaking. Mostly, while speaking one gets into argument. This silence helps us to not get into one and helps in improving the listening skills. One is more devoted to pay the undivided attention to the speaker. Mostly we listen with the intent to reply not to understand.
There is something more than maun i.e. not to speak unnecessarily. Speaking only per necessity. When we speak, we end up killing microorganism in the atmosphere. Unknowingly, we perform the violence. Speaking less helps in practising non-violence.
Adding the element of sweetness and honesty to voice. Food is incomplete without sweet. Likewise, conversing is incomplete without the softness of the voice. One wins the heart of the listener speaking gently and sweetly. Our honourable Prime Minister is a great example on that front. Without honesty, the power of words won’t have any impact. Truth can be troubled but not defeated. You trust people more those who are honest with you. Trust is easy to break, may be difficult to maintain. But way difficult to win back, after you have lost once.
By not having the power to speak, we understand the importance of voice more. Further we realise the pain of the people who spend all their life in muteness, who cannot utter a single word through their life.
Going forward at least for a week, you can practice “maun” for at least 10 minutes daily. If you see good results of the experiment, you can extend it for a month or more. There is no harm in doing it at least once.
