Everyone is a Salesman

What is Sales?

Does sales mean to sell something to someone? Are we selling all the time? You might not be a professional salesperson, but you still sell all the time. The most important sale a professional makes is convincing the manager for a promotion or increment in salary.

When we are convincing our manager to promote, we are actually selling him our perception, why we must be promoted. If we can make her buy into our words, we may get a promotion. When we ask someone for favor, we are basically selling her, why to help us. Recall any other interaction from your day to day life, you will be either on the buying side or the selling side.

“Every day of your life, you try to talk someone into something, ask for a favor or state your case with the hope of changing someone’s mind.”

Cindy McGovern, the self-described “First Lady of Sales”

Learn to sell. It is a critical skill of this century. Steve Jobs is one of the greatest salesman of all time. He made Bill Gates, his primary competitor, to invest in Apple to save the fortune of Apple.

By know you might be wondering how do we develop the salesman skill?

There is no ballpark answer to it. Practice makes everyone perfect. The next question will be how do we practice. We can do the same way a professional or traditional salesman do. Whenever we visit a shop for the first time, the salesman comes to us talk politely and show us the variety of products we want to buy. She is not afraid to talk to us just because we are strangers. She makes us feel connected to the shop and that’s how she sells us. Similarly, that’s how we form a connection with a stranger and practicing it over a period will make us a perfect salesman. Don’t be shy to make a sell to a stranger, whenever you meet next time.

Until then..
