Day 95:) Power of Silence

We know the charm of talking. It helps us in mixing and getting involved with others.

On an average, how many hours do you talk in a day?

Research shows that most people speak 16,000 words a day on an average, equivalent to 5 hours of speaking.

On the other hand quietness has its own spot. One of my friends maintains silence for 2 hours daily since more than 100 days. He keeps the quietude intentionally.

How does being intentionally dumb for some time in a day help us?

There are numerous benefits one can reap. One saves on energy. When we are speaking, we are consuming lots of energy. Secondly, one avoids conflict. As we cannot utter a word, we indulge in less arguments. Thirdly, one learns the importance of voice. We know the significance of things better, after we lost them as we crave for the things which we don’t have. Fourthly, one can concentrate easily. The mind will be more focused. We can analyze the situation better and get the task done quickly. Fifthly, one starts to communicate with gestures. We start playing damsharas. These are many more ripe fruits one can gain from practicing silence.

One can start with baby steps, with just 10 minutes or even 5 minutes daily. As the time passes one can keep on increasing the time. You may think, we already not speaking for lots of the time. Why do we need practice it differently?

Committing is different. When one commits silence for 5 minutes one is bound to not utter a word. However, if we are not committed, we can utter a word whenever we want. That’s why we don’t realize the significance of being vocal as we have the luxury of voicing whenever we want.
